acceptance letter arrives, there's great relief — but the work is really just
beginning. After acceptance, there's a series of practical tasks to handle
before you go and in your first days after arrival. If you prepare well, your
first month becomes not chaos but an enjoyable settling-in period.
Before You Go
Get your visa,
arrange your flight, and sort out your accommodation in advance — especially
secure a place for your first few weeks. Prepare both digital and printed
copies of important documents (acceptance letter, passport, visa, financial
documents). Contact your school's international student office; they usually
offer pre-arrival guidance.
Accommodation
The first big
decision is where you'll stay. University dorms are usually the easiest and
most social start — especially if you don't know the country at all. Private
rentals are more independent but require more effort. Staying in a dorm the
first term and moving once you know the country is a safe strategy for most
students.
Bank Account and Phone
One of the
first tasks after arrival is opening a local bank account — you'll need it for
rent, bills, and daily spending. You'll usually be asked for your student
document, passport, and proof of address. Getting a local SIM card or line is
also a practical step to handle in the first days.
Health Insurance
Most countries
require health insurance for a student visa. In some countries the school
provides it, in others you arrange it yourself. This is something not to skip —
both a legal requirement and what protects you in an unexpected medical
situation abroad.
The First Weeks
It's completely
normal to feel a little lost and a little lonely in the first days. Join
orientation events, meet other international students, explore your campus and
neighbourhood. Once the first month passes, everything that felt foreign at
first starts to feel familiar. Be patient — everyone goes through this
transition.
